Coming up at Medway River Lit's Second Weekend

Coming up this weekend on Medway River Lit's second weekend, starting on Friday 8 November, it’s Poetry Republic - The Meanderslam! at Coffee Republic Chatham. Doors from 6:00 PM. Come along to Medway River Lit’s first ever poetry slam. Who will win our cash prize? Sign up on the night. Get there early! Hosted by Lalah-Simone Springer.


On Saturday 9 November, all events are at Chatham Library. For our younger writers, aged 9 to 12, Tom Mitchell will be joining us at 12.30pm. Tom is the author of the hilarious, fast-paced, and action packed ‘How to stop the end of the world’.

From 2-4.15pm, we’ll have a Masterclass and panel on Writing Historical Fiction with author Michael Hughes, the author of ‘Country’ and Charlotte Byrne, a writer of Young Adult fiction and PhD student.


Then you’ve got a chance to get something to eat in one of Chatham’s cafes, while we set up the library for An evening of ‘90s fandom’, headlined by Jim Bob from indie music legends, Carter USM, supported by poet Sarah L Dixon and graphic novelist Sam Hall.

On Sunday 10 November, at Rochester Library, from 1.30pm, we’ll finally find out who won the 2024 Rosemary McLeish Poetry Prize.


At 2pm, Zahra Barri will be talking about her book, ‘Daughters of the Nile’, a bold multi-generational novel exploring themes of queerness, revolution and Islamic sisterhood.

Followed at 3pm, by Maggie Harris, a Guyana Prize for Literature winning author and poet.

Maggie will be talking about ‘Kiskadee Girl’, her memoir of her youth in Guyana.
