Photos from our Carbon Literacy Awareness Event on 13 November

We were delighted that our Carbon Literacy Awareness event on 13 November with Spotlites Theatre was well attended and the young performers from Spotlites created a brilliant short play which highlighted some of their concerns about the climate crisis.

Younger members of Spotlites also created an amazing art exhibition and soundscape inspired by the four elements theme of this year's festival. Thanks to our facilitator Rachael, who helped them create their masterpieces! The audience was able to explore the artworks whilst looking for bears, (inspired by the fact that 13 Nov is also Michael Rosen Day - creator of 'We're going on a bear hunt',) which had a QR code on them revealing a link to short films where the Spotlites kids shared some info about carbon literacy.

After the play - which touched on themes of how AI uses up water and what will eventually happen to the world if there's no water, we hosted a Q and A with Sarah Booth from the Carbon Literacy Project, with Barry from Medway River Lit and Kieron from Spotlites, and everyone in the audience made a pledge as to what they were going to do to contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

Some of the ideas were to tell the next generation the story and hold big corporations to task. It often feels like it's impossible to do anything about it, but we all have a role to play, whether that's reducing our use of cloud storage (which has a bigger footprint than AI), or only buying recycled paper for your printer. Another way we can help, is to recycle books.

Spotlites and Medway River Lit Book Swap Station

While it's hard to get precise, up-to-the-minute figures, studies and reports consistently highlight the problem that tonnes of books go to landfill each year due to difficulties in recycling. A 2019 report by the environmental charity, Hubbub, estimated that over 320 million books were destined for landfill each year in the UK alone.

So we're delighted to launch our Book Swap Station - you can bring a book and swap it for another, or you can simply take some books that you think you might love.

The Book Swap Station is full of books for young people and children, and lives at Spotlites Theatre (see opening hours on their website). If you're looking for a Christmas gift, or just have some books to donate, please come and see what's available.

We'll have an update about the winner of the Draw A Bear competition, and more news on Carbon Literacy Training soon!

If you would like to find out more about Carbon Literacy a good place to start is the Carbon Literacy Project, and we've also got a climate economist and comedian, Dr Matt Winning, closing the festival on 30 November! (Find out more)
