Hello! My name is Skai Campbell, and I am currently and illustration student at Camberwell College of Arts. Although I am studying art currently, my background is in biology! I’ve always been interested in biology and art, and those dual interests felt like they were at odds for most of my life. Although I enjoyed studying biology at university, when I began working after graduation, I realized that what I really wanted to do was to find combine the two. I’ve since been trying to create art which I hope sparks an interest and curiosity in the natural world, or at the very least introduces people to new parts of it they may not know.
I find a lot of inspiration comes from local wildlife - there's something extremely rewarding about becoming familiar with what is around you, spending time in a familiar environment and slowly noticing more and more things until a bigger picture emerges. When I began on the Make Waves programme and learnt that I had to host a workshop, doing something that allowed me to share those interests with those around me felt like a natural progression. I have always loved comic books and have also steadily become more involved in zine making, and I felt both were interesting tools which can be used to get people to engage with nature.

The workshop will be an interactive session where we will be exploring all things zines and comics before diving into making our own zines about the natural world. The making will be led by myself, with plenty of printed worksheets showing exactly how to fold and cut the paper to create simple 8-page zines, though there will be other options for the more ambitious crafters! There will be a plethora of art materials to use form pens and pencils, to collage and stamps, so it will be a great opportunity to flex your creative muscles or perhaps try something new!

Comics are a lot broader than what most people assume when they initially see the word, and so I really want to introduce to people to what I think are some of the lesser appreciated kinds. Likewise, zines have a rich history of being used to share information and build community, and so it felt right using both to encourage people to reflect on and share their interests. I hope that people can use the space to connect and share whatever aspects of the outdoors brings them joy – whether its gardening, a local park, the sight of a seagull in the dockyard or the lions on a BBC documentary, you can make a book about it!

This event will be held at Intra Arts 337-341 High St, Rochester ME1 1DA, on Sunday 3 November, and will run from 2pm-4pm. All materials will be provided. The building is ramp accessible with a ground floor toilet but the toilet is not fully accessible. It's for people aged 18+, and you'll need to book with Ideas Test.
